Julie Hughes, Ed.S., NCSP

Licensed School Psychologist

Julie has been working with students of all ages to help them achieve their goals for many years. As an educator in public and private schools abroad as well as the homeschool setting, Julie developed a heart for struggling learners. She pursued licensure as an educational therapist to address cognition, perception, academics, and emotions, which ultimately led to a career in school psychology. She firmly believes that each of us desires to feel competent and confident and enjoys helping clients discover and maximize their strengths.

Julie’s approach is centered on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and draws on principles from positive psychology and solution focused counseling. Her experience includes conducting individual and group counseling, administering comprehensive psychological evaluations, and developing and monitoring behavioral support plans. She provides consultation to school staff and parents to support the social, emotional, behavioral, and educational needs of children and young adults. She addresses anxiety, depression, ADHD and executive functioning deficits, emotional regulation, learning disabilities, social skills, and stress management. She has years of experience in the homeschoolcommunity and can provide faith-based therapy if requested. Julie completed her undergraduate degree in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering at Cornell University, followed by an MA in English Linguistics from George Mason University. She became licensed as an educational therapist through the National Institute for Learning Development (NILD) and became a certified Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) mediator. As her interest inpsychology deepened, she pursued her master’s degree and Ed. S. in school psychology from Radford University. She is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists (VASP).

When not working, Julie enjoys playing games with her family, reading, cooking, and walking her golden retriever.
