Psychoeducational Assessments

Is Your Child Gifted? Why You Need Psychoeducational Assessments

You know your child is smart, and you want to make sure that they're being appropriately challenged in school. Sometimes, this is easier said than done. If you're finding that your child is breezing through their homework assignments, they're complaining about being bored in the classroom, or they're simply not challenged at school, going through a set of psychoeducational assessments may be the right next step to determine how best to help your child learn and grow.

When children are gifted, they may act out at school. If your child has not started to do so yet, this may happen as they grow further and further ahead of their peers. Children thrive when they're in an environment in which they feel appropriately challenged. When a child knows that they understand the work immediately, and there's no time in which they need to work hard to figure it out, they may become restless and/ or distracted. This can lead to behavioral issues, social issues, and more.

When your child goes through a set of psychoeducational assessments, a therapist will work with you and your child to understand where your child is cognitively. The therapist will administer a number of psychological and educational assessments that will help you to understand what's going on in your child's mind. After the assessments are completed, you'll be able to take this information to your child's teacher and work together to create an educational plan that makes sense for your child. This could be something as simple as enrichment work, or as complex as skipping a grade.
