MEET
DEREK HENDERSON

School Psychology Resident
Hello, I’m Derek, a School Psychology Resident with over a decade of experience in the public school and private settings. I am passionate about helping children and their families make positive changes in their life and navigate challenges including but not limited to: anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, impulse control, attention/executive functioning weaknesses, social stress, academic stress, and learning differences. I also specialize in administering psychological and psychoeducational evaluations.
My goal is to inspire you to engage in more productive thinking, make positive changes in your life, and incorporate habits which lead to a healthier and happier life. I provide individual psychotherapy to children (age 6 and over), adolescents, and young adults. I believe in a strong therapeutic relationship and also enjoy using humor when appropriate. My approach is primarily solution focused and incorporates positive psychology practices and principles. I also incorporate other approaches such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness. When working with clients, I focus on skill development compared to viewing behavior as a deficit or weakness. I also believe strongly in working collaboratively with parents to help reinforce skills.
I am a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and hold a Master’s degree in School Psychology from George Mason University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Dayton. Outside of work, I am passionate about outdoor activities, exercising, watching sports, and spending time with friends and family.
