Sarah Akers, Ed.S., NCSP

Licensed School Psychologist

Welcome! I’m Sarah, a Licensed School Psychologist with more than 10 years experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults ranging from preschool to college-aged. My passion is helping individuals thrive and reach their full potential by better understanding themselves and learning strategies to build resilience and overcome obstacles in their lives. I enjoy working with clients to achieve their goals, identify and regulate their emotions, and effectively navigate social conflicts. I also enjoy and specialize in conducting evaluations to better understand clients’ learning profiles, including but not limited to identification of dyslexia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism.

My approach to therapy is strengths-based and individualized to each client’s needs. I believe in the power of a strong therapeutic relationship that is built on warmth, compassion, empathy, and positive regard. In my work with clients, I draw on my training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Mindfulness practices.

Prior to joining THLH, I worked in Fairfax County Public Schools for 8 years and in Connecticut public schools for 2 years. Within FCPS, I supported a variety of specialized programs including ones for students with emotional disabilities and those on the autism spectrum.

I received my Bachelors, Masters, and Educational Specialist degrees from James Madison University. I also hold a post-graduate certificate in School Neuropsychology.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughters, being outdoors, running, reading, and being a lifelong learner.
