Living with Uncertainty: How Therapy Can Help Navigating Workforce Changes

If you're feeling overwhelmed, here are some immediate steps you can take to feel more in control:

  • Breathe & Reset – Take a few deep breaths to calm your nervous system. Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8).

  • Limit Doomscrolling – Reduce exposure to stress-inducing news or workplace gossip.

  • Get Moving – A short walk, stretch, or exercise can help reduce stress and improve mood.

  • Make a Plan – Write down your top three concerns and brainstorm small, actionable steps to address them.

  • Focus on What You Can Control – Consider exploring what options are available to you. Are there other job opportunities that align with your goals? Are you able to transition back to the office in a way that works for you? Take this time to reevaluate what you want from your career and life.

  • Picture Your Ideal Day – What does your best work-life balance look like? Reflect on changes that could bring you closer to that vision and take steps toward it.

  • Say It Out Loud – Acknowledge the unfairness of the situation. It’s okay to feel frustrated. Recognizing your emotions can help you process and move forward.

  • Reach Out – Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or colleague about how you're feeling.
