May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month and with so many changes occurring within the DMV area, at Think Happy Live Healthy we wanted to address navigating uncertain times as a mother. In a world that feels increasingly uncertain, mothers are faced with the delicate balance of caring for their children, managing family life, and coping with the stress of unexpected events. Recently, thousands of federal employees have either been laid-off, forced to return to office, or have chosen to leave their roles. These times present significant challenges for families as they navigate the fears of the unknown. It is crucial to acknowledge that uncertainty itself can be distressing. The unknown can evoke feelings of anxiety, fear, and a sense of helplessness. As a mother, it is not only your own well-being that you are concerned about but also the emotional and psychological stability of your children. In the midst of such challenges, there are tools and coping strategies that can help mothers find stability, peace, and resilience.

Here are several key strategies to help navigate uncertain times with more clarity, calm, and empowerment.

1. Radical Acceptance: Embrace What You Cannot Control

The first step in dealing with uncertainty is learning to practice radical acceptance. Radical Acceptance, a skill utilized in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), focuses on acknowledging and accepting the present moment, regardless of how difficult it may be. When looking at your situation without judgement, or resistance, you can recognize the things that are beyond your control. You can place your energy on coping with your situation, rather than trying to change the things you cannot control.

As a mother, you may not be able to control job layoffs, or other external factors. However, what you can control is how you respond. Practicing radical acceptance helps reduce feelings of frustration and helplessness by acknowledging the reality of the situation. You may not have all the answers, but you can still find ways to provide a sense of safety and stability for your family.

2. Create a Plan with Your Family: Structure and Communication

While you cannot control everything, you can take proactive steps by creating a plan with your family. When uncertainty looms, having a plan can bring a sense of structure and reduce feelings of chaos.

Sit down with your family to discuss the current situation and create an action plan. This may include discussing finances, setting realistic goals, and making necessary adjustments to daily routines. Open communication with your partner, children (if of appropriate ages), and even extended family members will foster a sense of teamwork and shared responsibility.

A well-organized plan does not eliminate stress, but it can provide a sense of control and direction during uncertain times.

3. Practice Gratitude for the Present Moment

Gratitude is one of the most effective ways to counterbalance feelings of anxiety and worry. By intentionally focusing on what is going well, no matter how small, you can shift your perspective. The simple act of noticing and appreciating the present moment—whether it is a warm cup of coffee, a hug from your child, or the sound of laughter in your home—can anchor you in the here and now, helping to reduce the overwhelm caused by fear of the future.

You might consider starting a gratitude journal, where you list a few things each day that you are thankful for. In times of uncertainty, practicing gratitude is a reminder that despite challenges, there are still sources of joy and peace in your life.

4. Seek Support and Build Your Community

Mama, lean on your support system during this time. Whether it is acknowledging the need for childcare, or emotional support from close family or friends, or an extra session with your therapist - utilize your resources.
